Do you have a secret swimming hole (or favorite)? tell us about it.
I recently moved West from a long time in Brooklyn so there are many swimming holes to be discovered! Everything is bigger in New York so I’d say my favorite (but definitely not secret) swimming hole is Brighton Beach. In the summer we would take long bike rides to the boardwalk and hit up this delicious Russian deli. After loading up on pickled fishes, beet salads and potatoes of all sorts we’d picnic on the beach and listen to the waves.

What is your go-to picnic fare?
Finger foods: cured meats, cheeses, hummus, baba ganoush, veggies, guacamole… I’m a picker!

Describe your dream summer ootd (outfit of the day).
somehow i always find myself in denim during the summer (Ha! and i made a patchwork denim vest for the catalog). Always cutoffs, a denim dress, or lightweight shirt dress. I’m always on my bike so i like to be comfortable. and always wear a bathing suit underneath because the next pool is just around the corner!

Desert Island music?
I’m really into salsa dancing so something with a Latin vibe. Maybe Hector Lavoe or Tito Puente to keep dancing and forget I’m alone on a Desert Island 🙂

What will you be reading this summer vacation?
I have goals of finishing Kate Fletcher’s 2nd edition of “Sustainable Fashion and Textiles”. Everyone who wears clothes should pick up one of her books. She successfully conveys her message that the clothing industry needs to check itself without sounding preachy. She lays down the facts while encouraging the reader to come up with her own solutions.

What’s got you on your soapbox lately?
always fast fashion! it’s a mind game convincing us we need more “stuff” to be beautiful. Meanwhile, one CEO gets rich and everybody else makes minimum wage or less. i’ll leave it at that.

Tell us about something you recently learned.
i went to a Persian New Year party and learned about the “haft-seen”, an arrangement of seven symbolic edible items that represent prosperity in the new year. For example, garlic represents medicine and health, the apple represents beauty, while lentil sprouts represent rebirth. I love any experience that encourages you to be present and aware of what you’re doing, even if it’s the simple act of eating. It reminded me to be conscious and grateful of the nourishment my food gives me.

Current obsession?
weaving! I’m sharing my studio with a weaver and my mind is blown. I’ve always wanted to learn and am so fascinated by the potential patterns and textures that lie in just plain weave. stay tuned!

Who is your art crush?
Maria Piessis. She has this amazing curiosity and passion about life that is translated into her work. She spotlights the tiny details in the every-day that are often overlooked and has an insanely refined aesthetic. She can make the mundane extraordinary and she even makes avocados sexy.
