Shayna Stevenson | Ajax, ON | Toronto, ON
Jen Collins | Fife, Scotland | Scranton, PA
Is your work influenced by season or changing weather?
Shayna: Definitely. I’m a sucker for the changing of seasons, and you can see that reflected in the colours I use and inspirations for new pieces.
Jen: The cooler months are a good time for mug production; not only are they perfect for holding a warm beverage, they make a great little gift too.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever gotten in the mail?
Shayna: My mom once sent me two boxes of my favourite north american comfort foods while I was living in Japan.
Jen: My best friend surprised me on my birthday last year by sending a beautiful little wooden bowl that she’d hand-turned herself.
What is your favorite holiday tradition (new or old)?
Shayna: Making a big Christmas morning breakfast with my family.
Jen: Taking a few days out to do nothing but watch films, eat food and drink hot toddies with your favourite people.
How do you find comfort?
Shayna: Naps and hot baths, but not at the same time.
Jen: A couple of hours to myself is best spent with a blanket, pile of pillows, cup of tea and a good book.
Do you have a favorite fall/winter/holiday memory?
Shayna: Very slowly walking around the city after an ice storm. Everything was so quiet and ridiculously beautiful.
Jen: Spending a few days in a cottage with friends during our first proper Canadian winter. Highlight: ice skating on a lake. Low point: using an outhouse in -20ºc.
What is your go-to holiday dish?
Shayna: I prefer to bake, so I often make an apple blackberry crumble. And mulled wine to stay warm. 🙂
Jen: My boyfriend turns our festive leftovers into a Scottish dish called Rumbledethumps: mix all of the roasted veg with mashed potatoes, cover with cheese and bake in an oven. YUM.
